The Mercy Children’s Center is a school for orphaned children in the Kawangware slum in Nairobi Kenya. A sister school has also been started in the town of Busia, in western Kenya. These two schools are run by volunteers and currently work with about 75 children each. We are making progress towards providing for the children’s needs but these are still far from being met, and all support is welcome.
Most of the kids are “AIDS orphans” – children whose parents died from HIV/AIDS –related causes. They live in the neighborhood under various circumstances, mostly with relatives though some have very tenuous, even abusive, home situations. We are currently able to provide them with a place to go in the day, a basic free lunch, and a basic free education. However in many cases their full nutritional needs are not yet being met and many do not even have a proper outfit to wear to school. The current facility is a two room house with no running water and just two electric bulbs, that work a few hours per week.
